Working Principle of the Contactor in EP F4 Electric Forklifts

1. What is a contactor in an electric forklift?

A contactor is an essential electrical device in the control system of an electric forklift. It is an electromagnetic switch used to control high-power circuits by a low-voltage signal.

In the EP F4 electric forklift, the contactor connects the battery (lithium or lead-acid) to the driving motor or lifting motor, ensuring stable operation and safety while preventing electrical faults.

2. Working principle of the contactor in EP F4 forklifts

The contactor operates based on the electromagnetic principle:

• OFF state (standby)
  When the forklift is not operating or the ECU has not sent a control signal, the coil of the contactor has no current. The main contacts remain open, and no power flows to the motor.

• ON state (working)
  When the operator moves the control lever (lifting, lowering, forward, or reverse), the ECU sends a 12V/24V signal to the coil. The electromagnetic field attracts the core, closing the main contacts → current from the battery (48V/80V) is supplied to the motor.

• Release state (cut-off)
  When the control lever is released, the ECU stops sending the signal. The coil loses power, and the spring pushes the core back to its original position → the main contacts open, cutting off the power supply to the motor.
